A guide for business stakeholders

What an IT posture assessment should help you understand.

IT posture describes how the environment is configured, protected, managed and prepared to support the business. It includes technology controls and the operational practices behind them, not just whether updates are installed.

Look across the connected environment

Identity, devices, networks, Microsoft 365, recovery arrangements and operational policies affect one another. Reviewing only one category can miss dependencies elsewhere in the environment.

For example, an access policy needs to be understood alongside the accounts and devices it applies to. A recovery plan needs to be considered alongside actual backup coverage, responsibilities and testing evidence.

Separate strengths, gaps and unknowns

An assessment should explain which findings are supported by evidence and which items need further verification. An unknown is not automatically a pass or a failure; it is a reason to clarify scope or obtain more information.

Stakeholders should be able to ask what was checked, when it was checked, what evidence supports the finding and what action is recommended.

Use the score alongside individual findings

A score can make an overall picture easier to discuss, but important individual risks must remain visible. Ask how the categories relate to the assessment scope and how priorities are set.

The practical output is a sequence of decisions: what needs attention now, what depends on another change, who owns the work and how progress will be reviewed.

Keep the business involved

A useful assessment starts with business needs, critical operations and applicable requirements. Leadership should understand why recommendations matter and what is outside the engagement.
